InShape

Feburary 2024

The INShape internship through IUPUI was carried out at the National Institute of Fitness and Sport (NIFS) located on campus. This was a 9-week period in which I was assigned a client who had specific goals they wanted to reach by the end of our time together. The INShape program provided me with quality hands-on experience with personal training and coaching which helped sharpen the skills I have today. Two instances that were exceptional learning experiences were the assessments conducted with my client to determine their pre-training and post-training fitness levels. Reflecting on these experiences, the initial fitness tests I conducted on my client provided me with the knowledge and skills to accurately determine someone’s fitness levels in comparison to the general population. The post assessment tests allowed me to visually see the progress my client had made and just how well both of our hard work had paid off over the 9 weeks. My INShape experience can be summed up in 6 words: Guidance, Motivation, Technique, Progress, Support, Adaptation. I chose these words because they all symbolize milestones that not only me, but my client had reached and built upon during our time together.

IUPUI Motor Activity Clinic Internship

Service Clinic | August 2023

I was assigned a client who suffered from cerebral palsy and worked closely with him over a 6-week period to provide sessions of recreational therapy in order to increase his quality of life. My client was a young child who could not use their left leg or arm very well. At the end of our time together his overall range of motion in his affected limbs as well as pain level both improved. Reflecting on this experience, my time at the Motor Activity Clinic provided me with amazing experience working with a diverse group of people which improved my coaching and motivational skills. It also taught me more ways of creating unique exercise programs that are optimized to help individuals improve efficiently and effectively.

Student Wellness Coaching Internship

Service Clinic | Feburary 2024

The IUPUI wellness coaching program caters exclusively to students enrolled in the School of Health and Human Sciences. During my time as a coach, I partnered with a peer who sought to enhance their body composition, increase muscular strength, and improve endurance. Over a 6-week period, we had weekly remote meetings focused on discussing nutrition, exercise routines, and lifestyle adjustments. Reflecting on this experience, I learned that being face to face with someone is not a necessity for guiding individuals towards their fitness objectives. Empowering individuals with knowledge about nutrition and exercise enables them to chart their own course towards success and provdes them with valuable insights for their future well-being.
